5 Years of Success and Innovation: Ukrainian-Swedish Research Center SUMEYA Celebrates Anniversary!

This May, the Ukrainian-Swedish Research Center (USRC) SUMEYA celebrates its five-year anniversary! Conceived as a concept in 2019 and established in 2020 through the joint efforts of Professor Roman Moskalenko from Sumy State University and Professor Thomas Boren from Umeå University (Sweden), the SUMEYA Center has become a true bridge for international scientific cooperation and a hub for innovation.

Despite its small staff, with most of the Center’s core activities carried out personally by Professor Roman Moskalenko, SUMEYA has achieved impressive results that confirm the success of its founding vision.

Key Achievements and Role of the SUMEYA Center:

  • Significant Grant Funding Attraction: The SUMEYA Center has proven to be an effective tool for attracting international and national grants. Among its most notable achievements is securing the prestigious HORIZON EUROPE MSCA “ARGO” project. Additionally, the Center successfully implemented a Ukrainian-Latvian bilateral project researching the application of copper nanoparticles, and a project under the HORIZON 2020 return funds instrument from the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine. These projects not only provide financial support for research but also foster the development of new scientific directions.
  • High-Quality Scientific Publications and Dissertation Defenses: A number of high-quality scientific studies have been published under the affiliation of USRC SUMEYA, demonstrating the Center’s high level of scientific development. Another important achievement is the recent successful defense of a PhD dissertation by Anna Butsyk, which highlights the Center’s contribution to training young scientists.
  • Recognition and Awards: Sumy State University has highly commended the SUMEYA Center’s activities, honoring it with certificates of merit for securing 2nd and 3rd prize places in the university’s performance rankings for 2023 and 2024. This is a clear testament to the Center’s effectiveness and significance for the university.
  • Infrastructure Development: USRC SUMEYA plays a vital infrastructure-building role. For its full operation, Sumy State University allocated and renovated premises in University Dormitory No. 1 (25 Myru Street). Future plans include renovating additional spaces in the shelter, which will ensure the Center’s continuous and safe operation even during these challenging times.

Today, amidst difficult wartime, the Ukrainian-Swedish Research Center SUMEYA continues to work actively, looking to the future with hope and faith in the continued development of international scientific cooperation.
